Building outdoor living & lighting in Nashville clay

Middle Tennessee has a long, genuinely pleasant shoulder season, which is why outdoor living space gets used here far more than the summer heat would suggest. Lighting is what extends it into the evening, and it does more for how often a space is used than almost anything else in the budget.

Fire features are foundations first. Anything of that weight needs a proper footing rather than sitting on a patio slab, and building it on the slab is how they crack away within a few winters.

FAQ

Yard by yard: outdoor living & lighting questions

How far from the house should a fire pit be?

At least ten feet from the house, the fence and any overhang, and further from trees. Metro Nashville and most surrounding counties restrict open burning, so a wood fire pit sits inside those rules while a gas fire feature does not. Where it sits also decides whether the smoke goes into your seating or your neighbor’s window, which is worth thinking about before the pavers go down.

What does landscape lighting actually cost to run?

Very little. Modern low-voltage LED fixtures draw a few watts each, so a full yard on a timer or photocell adds a small amount to a monthly bill. The real cost is installation — the transformer, the wire runs, and fixtures that survive weather and lawn equipment. Cheap fixtures corrode and fail within a couple of seasons; brass and copper ones last decades.
