Building water features & ponds in Nashville clay
A pondless waterfall is the feature most people actually want once they understand the difference: the water disappears into a gravel reservoir at the bottom, so there is no open pond to skim, no algae to fight and nothing for a toddler to fall into. The sound and the movement are the same. A true pond makes sense when fish are the point.
The pump is sized to the height and width of the fall, not to the size of the basin, and undersizing it is the most common mistake in a home-built feature — the water dribbles rather than falls. Lighting is the other half: a feature that only exists in daylight is half a feature in a climate where the evening is when the patio gets used.
Middle Tennessee freezes hard enough to crack a shallow basin and split an exposed pump line, so the reservoir depth, the pump placement and whether the feature runs through winter are decided at design, not discovered in January.

FAQ
Yard by yard: water features & ponds questions
What is a pondless waterfall, and why do most people choose one?
A waterfall and stream that disappear into a gravel reservoir at the bottom instead of a pond. You get the sound and the movement without open water to skim, algae to fight, or a hazard for small children, and it can be switched off when you travel. A true pond makes sense when fish are the point; for everyone else, pondless is the better answer.
How much maintenance does a water feature need?
A pondless feature: topping up the reservoir in summer, a filter clean a few times a year, and a winter decision about whether to run it. A koi pond: weekly skimming, seasonal filter work, water testing, and attention to the fish. Both need a pump that is sized correctly and placed where it can be reached, because the pump is the part that eventually needs service.
