Building hardscaping & pavers in Nashville clay
A paver patio is a base with pavers on top, and the base is the job. Six to eight inches of compacted aggregate on a graded subgrade is what keeps the surface flat through freeze-thaw; pavers laid on a couple of inches of sand over clay heave the first winter and never recover. When two quotes are far apart, the difference is almost always underneath.
The clay soil across this region holds water and swells, which is why the base depth here matters more than it would on sand or gravel ground. Drainage is designed in — the patio falls away from the house, and where water collects it is given somewhere to go — because a paver surface that ponds is one that ices.
Walls and steps are structural even when they are decorative. A seat wall carries people; a set of steps carries the same freeze-thaw movement as the patio. Both are built on their own footing and tied into the field so the whole thing moves together rather than in pieces.

FAQ
Yard by yard: hardscaping & pavers questions
Pavers or poured concrete for a patio?
Pavers if you want a surface that can be repaired one unit at a time and does not crack; concrete if the budget is tighter and you accept that it will eventually crack and cannot be patched invisibly. Pavers on a proper base outlast concrete in Middle Tennessee freeze-thaw, and a stained or damaged paver is lifted and replaced. A cracked slab is a cracked slab.
What is a permeable paver system?
Pavers laid with wider joints filled with small stone over an open-graded aggregate base, so rain soaks through the surface into the ground rather than running off it. On a lot where runoff floods a low spot or a neighbor, or where stormwater rules limit hard surface, it solves the drainage problem and the patio problem in one structure.
